I have an article in the latest issue on art in Amsterdam, based on a trip just over a year ago <a href=\"https:\/\/samathieson.com\/sa-mathieson\/amsterdam-the-city-which-tells-britain-it-is-not-an-island\/\" rel=\"noopener\">which I wrote about for Beacon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I focused on two galleries. One, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rijksmuseum.nl\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Rijksmuseum<\/a>, is the obvious choice &#8211; although that doesn&#8217;t make it any less brilliant, particularly following its recent renovations. The other is less well-known, and is happy to be so given it only has capacity for a handful of visitors each day: the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.collectiesix.nl\/app\/fsm.php?vwr=vrijetekst&amp;mid=49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Six Collection<\/a>, situated in the Six family&#8217;s grand house on the Amstel.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-67078\" src=\"https:\/\/samathieson.com\/sa-mathieson\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Six-Collection-house-on-Amstel-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Six Collection house on Amstel\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/samathieson.com\/sa-mathieson\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Six-Collection-house-on-Amstel-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/samathieson.com\/sa-mathieson\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Six-Collection-house-on-Amstel-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/samathieson.com\/sa-mathieson\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Six-Collection-house-on-Amstel-900x675.jpg 900w, https:\/\/samathieson.com\/sa-mathieson\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Six-Collection-house-on-Amstel.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how I describe it in the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is\u00a0worth visiting purely to see Rembrandt\u2019s portrait\u00a0of his friend, the first Jan Six: while parts of the\u00a0picture are daubed by thumb, the thoughtful,\u00a0enquiring face is detailed and entrancing.<\/p>\n<p>But there are many more pictures to see,\u00a0including Paulus Potter\u2019s giant portrait of\u00a0Diederik Tulp. In the early 20th century, the Six\u00a0family built a room on top of an indoor stable\u00a0just large enough to house the picture, before\u00a0realising the calculations had not included\u00a0the picture\u2019s frame. So they bought seven\u00a0centimetres of the neighbouring courtyard,\u00a0extended the room and hung the picture, as you\u00a0do.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Advance bookings, which are free, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.collectiesix.nl\/app\/fsm.php?vwr=vrijeinhoud&amp;mid=64\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be made here<\/a> (you can see the Jan Six Rembrandt in the background).
